The Good and Bad of Taiwan's NHI
10 MINTaiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) is famous around the world. Started in 1995, it covers almost 99 percent of the people in Taiwan. It gives everyone cheap access to dentists, doctors, and big surgeries. Patients can choose any doctor or clinic they like without a referral letter. The co-pays are very low. For many people, a quick visit to the doctor costs less than a cup of coffee. Also, wait times are very short compared to Western countries.
However, this cheap system has a dark side. The low cost is possible because medical staff work very hard. Doctors and nurses in Taiwan work long hours, see too many patients, and get low salaries. Because of this, many medical workers feel tired and stressed. This burnout causes a shortage of staff in important areas like pediatrics and emergency rooms.
Also, because medicine is so cheap, some people waste resources. They visit clinics multiple times a week for small problems. As Taiwan's population gets older, the system is losing money. Without changes, this great system might not last forever.
Simple Vocabulary for Medical Topics
8 MINHow to Explain Taiwan's Healthcare Terms
4 MIN- 全民健康保險 (健保) → National Health Insurance (NHI)Use 'NHI' to talk about the system. Use 'NHI card' to talk about the plastic card.
- 健保卡 → NHI cardThe blue smart card with your photo and medical history.
- 掛號費 → registration feeThe small fee you pay at the front desk. Do not translate '掛號' as 'hang a number'. Say 'register for an appointment'.
- 醫療崩潰 → medical system collapseWhen hospitals have too many patients and not enough doctors, so they cannot work anymore.
Discussion: Is the Price Too Low?
5 MIN- Some people say Taiwan should make the NHI card registration fee more expensive so people do not waste medical resources. Do you agree? Why or why not?
- Would you prefer cheap and fast healthcare with busy doctors (like Taiwan), or expensive healthcare with more personal time (like the US)?
