Key Vocabulary for Cultural Harmony
8 MINThe Road of Spiritual Coexistence
10 MINTaipei's Xinsheng South Road (新生南路) has a special nickname: the 'Road to Heaven'. People call it this because it has many different religious buildings very close together. On this single street, several major world religions have built their sanctuaries side-by-side. You can find the historic Taipei Grand Mosque (台北清真大寺), the Holy Family Catholic Church (聖家堂), and several Protestant churches and Buddhist temples. Instead of having arguments, these different groups live together with respect and peace.
This special street grew during the fast growth of Taipei after World War II. The government gave land to the Taipei Grand Mosque (台北清真大寺) to help relationships with Muslim countries. Other religious groups bought land or got private donations to build their sanctuaries along this main road. Over the years, these groups did not stay separate. They became a close part of the local community, working together on charity events and welcoming visitors of all backgrounds.
This peaceful coexistence shows how Taiwanese people think about religion. They are practical and open to syncretism. Instead of thinking that only one religion can be right, local people often see different faiths as helpful ways to live a good life and help the community. The 'Road to Heaven' is a great symbol of this open mind, showing that different beliefs do not have to divide a neighborhood.

- How would you explain the concept of 'syncretism' (like Taiwanese '拜拜' culture which mixes Buddhism and Taoism) to a visitor who has never been to Taiwan?
- Do you think younger people in Taiwan are becoming less religious, or are they just practicing their faith in a different way?
